August 26, 2020 RMH Houston Prepares for Hurricane Laura Dear Friends: As the Ronald McDonald House Houston new Chief Executive Officer, I thank you for your kind welcome. Everyone has been enthusiastic and warm, just what you’d expect from people who are affiliated with this wonderful mission. I’m proud to join you.   2020 continues to bring challenges to Houston. Hurricane Laura will be here shortly. Like we have in the past, RMH Houston is prepared and our families are safe. Here are a few highlights of how we are taking precautions. We currently have 8 families who will be sheltering in place at Holcombe House. We moved everyone to the most interior rooms near a stairwell in case they experience very high winds. Our pantry is stocked with food and water and there are plenty of games and crafts to keep everyone busy. Volunteer groups who often donate delicious meals are being contacted now so we have a meal plan after the storm clears. Three of our experienced, professional staff members will be staying at the House through the storm to support the families As soon as the storm passes we will assess the building for damages to confirm it is safe for families to stay on campus. A back-up plan is already in place in case families need to evacuate.  Families staying in the hospitals will follow their protocols and our lounges will be closed tomorrow or until our staff can safely return to work. Please stay safe and dry. Our shopping list was updated TODAY! Everything listed on our wishlist is exactly what we need. Deliveries come directly to Holcombe House.  Shop Now Safe, Creative Ways Kids Can Help RMHH During the Pandemic  Host a Birthday Fundraiser on Facebook. Make activity or healthy snack bags for families in the hospital. Host a virtual family game night, dance-a-thon or talent show. Collect $10 from each family to participate. Donate proceeds to RMHH. Everyone wins! Make sock puppets for the kids and fill them with playing cards, crayons and a pad, hand cream and granola bars. Write a short, encouraging note and put it inside.  Why Your Support Makes A Huge Difference The Coronavirus Pandemic impacts the way we live every day. The Hurricane only exacerbates the current situation Many of our favorite activities and summer plans have been cancelled or postponed. But, we cannot ask RMH Houston families, whose children are in the middle of life-saving medical protocols, to put their treatment on pause. Your financial contribution enables us to continue providing support to families whose children are critically ill, during this unprecedented pandemic and bad weather. Whether you run, walk, or roll...register for the 11th Annual Trafigura Run for the House and support the mission of Ronald McDonald House Houston! REGISTER NOW Sign up for the Trafigura Run for the House, our annual 10K/5K run, walk, or roll on Saturday, December 5th, 2020. It's a great way to get some exercise and support a major fundraiser for our children and families. Race Information  USATF-certified 10K and 5K run/walk/roll. All registered runners receive a FREE neck gaiter face covering, finisher medal, event t-shirt, reusable tote bag, and other goodies generously donated by our sponsors! In an abundance of caution, all participants will be required to follow social distancing and face covering requirements at the time the race is held. Competitive runners, fun runners, families with children, and dogs are welcome. 100% of proceeds benefit the children and families of RMH Houston. Up to $300,000 will be generously matched, dollar for dollar, by the Trafigura Foundation! Ronald McDonald House Houston is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will be following all recommendations and requirements set forth by the City of Houston and Harris County. Participants will be required to follow social distancing and facial covering requirements at the time the race is held. The safety of our guests, volunteers, spectators, and all who are in attendance is our utmost priority. If you feel sick the morning of the race or have any symptoms of COVID-19, stay home.  If the event is cancelled, registered participants will be notified by email. Notifications to the Ronald McDonald House Houston website and social media feeds will also be made. Ronald McDonald House Houston is truly grateful for ALL who support the event in any manner. Due to the fundraising nature of the event, Ronald McDonald House Houston is unable to refund event sponsors, race registrants, or donors in the instance of cancellation.
